Despite an unprecedented amount of neighborhood opposition and knowledge of INACCURATE and MISLEADING information in the grant application, Steve
Kinsey, District 4 Supervisor, stated during a March meeting that he wanted the concrete slab sidewalk project to go forward, because "that is the only way the
County can be reimbursed for money already spent..."
In all fairness - also during our March conversation, Mr. Kinsey said he would not force this concrete sidewalk if we could show enough support for our community built path.
So, residents reached out to Marin Horizon School - and the few very vocal "pro-sidewalk" residents of Homestead on several occasions and not ONE of them volunteered to join the "community built" effort.
All we received from the "pro-slabbers" were attempts to marginalize and discredit anyone who dare opposed the project. We were labeled as "child haters."
The HVCA Board refused to help the HEAR US group engage in community outreach.
It seems that people and entities who lobbied for THIS concrete "sidewalk" -
have no respect for the property owners who have asked that it not be built, did not care about preserving the physical characteristics and shared road use patterns of a 100% safe street that has worked for many generations of Homesteaders.
There were two public meetings, but NO PUBLIC HEARING.
No notice to Evergreen residents or homeowners until the sidewalk was designed and funding was secured.
FYI : a sidewalk with curbs and gutters:
- conflicts with the Tamalpais Area Community Plan
- is something that residents never asked for and have stated repeatedly that we do not want;
- made of impervious concrete will add an average of one million gallons of unfiltered, polluted storm water runoff to Reed
Creek - which has been documented to contains federally protected endangered Steelhead trout.
Reed Creek flows into Arroyo Corte Madera del Presidio - a stream that is also known habitat for endangered species
- has altered the long standing "shared road use" patterns of Evergreen, which has a 100% safety record
- and it is an EYESORE - on what used to be a very green, scenic and pleasant street
MHS and the few vocal supporters only want "a sidewalk" if County does the work and the taxpayers foot the bill?
Some people do not understand the concept of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Since the illegal concrete slab has already been built, it now serves as a reminder of an EPIC FAIL by Marin County to respect our local community design plan and/or serve the Homestead community at large.
A community pool club is not a city hall.
I understand Mr. Kinsey's position, but this is making him very unpopular in Homestead Valley. I guess he is doing a better job for his other constituents, or he would not have been re-elected.
ReplyDeleteI do not see Kinsey as the evil overlord that some others say he is. That said, I do not appreciate that he wrote a letter to Roz Hamar in May of 2011, suggesting she ask the parents to write letters to the DPW in favor of the sidewalk.
